Office of the Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Europe, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific

In June 2019, Ambassador Khaled Khiari was appointed Assistant Secretary-General in the United Nations Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations (DPPA-DPO) in New York. His portfolio includes the Middle East, Europe, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Khiari was the Director General of Americas, Asia and Oceania in the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

From November 2012 through December 2018, Mr. Khiari served as the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Tunisia to the United Nations in New York. While in that position, Ambassador Khiari also served as: Vice President of the General Assembly, Facilitator of the General Assembly on the Inter-Governmental Negotiations on Security Council Reform, Facilitator of the General Assembly on the Reform of Human Rights Treaty Bodies, and President of the Executive Board of UN Women, among other functions.

Prior to his ambassadorship, Mr. Khiari, a career diplomat, alternated between the Foreign Ministry headquarters in Tunis and overseas postings. While at the Foreign Ministry he worked in the Department of Maghreb, Cabinet of the Minster of Foreign Affairs, Department of International Organizations and Conferences, and Department of European Union. Mr. Khiari was posted overseas to Geneva, Brussels, Geneva again, and New York.
